1987 Fleer Will Clark #269

I wanted to get Clark's best mainstream rookie card for ownage sake because Clark emerged as a ‘national superstar’ back when I was getting into baseball and collecting cards - perhaps I didn't really know what it was like to have Clark star for my MLB team but he was a pretty big deal for a little while in San Francisco.

Clark fit the stereotype of an intense, driven ‘money player’ with the ability to clutch up in key situations - though he retired back in 2000 I can go to YouTube and dial up highlights to marvel at his sweet swing.

After his glory days with the Giants, Clark moved on to the Texas Rangers and while still recognized as a star through the mid 1990s - his yearly numbers seemed to take more conventional, ‘mortal’ dips for a player in his 30s as compared to others who were hitting home runs left and right.

Clark had a rivalry with Canseco, who was my favorite player at the time.I remember them going back and forth in the papers. Remember,no twitter back then.Clark was clutch,no doubt about It and that's a great card!

Great card. Back in the late 80's/early 90's, I worked at a card shop (in San Jose) and there were times when we'd sell three to five of these every day. We'd sell 10 to 15 of the Topps card, because they were the more affordable card. Even during slow times, we'd still sell at least one or two of these cards per week.

I remember what Canseco referred to Clark as a three-toed sloth:

As for Clark's other rookies, I remember buying the 1987 Topps card for $3 or $4 in one of the first times I bought a bunch of singles at a card shop - I also had the 1987 Donruss card for the briefest of moments...until my conscience took over.

One of my favorite looking cards. I picked up a graded version just for the heck of it. There is something about that 1987 Fleer set. The Clark '86 Donruss Rookies was my very first single card purchase. $2-3 I think at that card shop that used to be in the Buena Park mall.
