2022 Topps Gold Brandon Marsh pick up

I picked this 2022 Topps Gold parallel up for about $10 after paying $40 another copy of the card [bundled with a couple of base cards] earlier in the year - maybe with the last purchase, I thought I was buying low where I thought Marsh had some upside for the Angels.

Go figure he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies and my pair of rookie-year centerpiece cards for Marsh probably gets lost in the shuffle within my regional collections - along with scattered cards of players who never quite delivered on their promise as one-time Angels prospects.

Entering 2022, I was wondering if Marsh's potential was more of 'good every day' player rather than an all-star type, since he's 24 already with the elite prospects breaking into the big leagues at 20, 21 or 22 years old - while Marsh's bat has cratered, maybe he could be a Jim Edmonds type where he taps into his ability to hit for average and power, though probably not to the extent where Edmonds evolved into a 25-30 home run slugger.

Marsh seemed was a pretty good defender in the outfield, always paying attention, hustling and seemingly making all the right plays where teammate Jo Adell can be a disaster on a game-by-game basis - there are Angels fans who would have preferred to give up on Adell, but in sort of a surprise, Marsh was the player sent off.

2019 Topps Series 2 Gold parallel David Fletcher #520

I was out of the country for three weeks and maybe I wanted to set things up where I'd buy miscellaneous cards online so I'd have something to look forward to coming back home - go figure, I didn't follow through on that plan, though I did make this one low-end purchase while overseas.

From the Series 2 flagship of Topps, I could try and hunt down a Fernando Tatis Jr. Gold parallel for the going rate or pay $2 for the rookie parallel of the guy on my local team - it's an apples to oranges comparison where Tatis Jr. is one of the hot rookies this year with superstar potential.

There is still a collector in me who kind of wants to chase some of the rookie-year issues of rookie stars like Tatis Jr. - but for now, the Fletcher card works as a ‘have not’ placeholder.

2016 Topps Pro Debut breaks - x6

Like last year's product, there is a subtle difference with the surface of the Pro Debut cards and the flagship MLB Topps cards - the players' images on the Pro Debut cards have a glossy coating while the backgrounds and borders are left matte.

The cards sort of feel a little flimsy in hand and may be sort of 'condition sensitive' - where the cards a prone to 'ding and tear' if handled loosely.

The player checklist in the Pro Debut set are recycled from previous Topps releases [like Pro Debut, Heritage Minors, 2015 Bowman Draft and 2016 Bowman] - I suppose a distinction to be made is the players in Pro Debut are wearing their minor league uniforms, while the same guys in mainstream Bowman brands are pictured in their MLB uniforms.

Maybe the overlap is a little more tolerable, though it just means Topps just wants another baseball card product out - as opposed to really digging deep for players who haven't really had cards before besides the random minor league team set.

I don't collect football cards at all

But I had to rescue this 2013 Topps gold parallel card of Max Unger out of the quarter box - maybe football cards like this are a dime a dozen, but I love the shot of Unger in pass protection as star quarterback Russell Wilson looks to throw a pass to one of his receivers.

Angel insert mailday - Scott Downs

Card blogger Justin from Justin's World was interested in a 2011 Topps Update Matt Stairs Gold parallel I'd pulled from a break and I ended up mailing the card out in exchange a 2011 Topps Update Gold parallel card of Scott Downs - I think he said he still had to actually to get the Downs card from another trade he was working on and I had to wait about two weeks before I could actually get the card in-hand.

The Downs card arrived safely in the mail a couple of days ago - it is a nice looking card and regardless of the delay, I was glad to have traded for it.
