TTM autographs received: Rollie Fingers

For about 15-20 years, I was occasionally getting Fingers to sign when he was a participant at celebrity golf tournaments - maybe the last time I saw him was back in 2014 or 2015 and my in-person autograph adventures has ceased for the most part.

I made it a mission to send a couple of loose cards to be signed by Fingers TTM [$15 per item] and they came back in 10 days - I am tempted to send the 1984 Donruss dual card off to Gaylord Perry, but perhaps old age has made him a spotty signer at best, even though he was doing TTM for a fee for the longest time.

TTM autograph received: Jim Rice

Maybe he was $10 per autograph for the longest time, but bumped his fee to $20 a couple of years ago - I sat on his 1984 Donruss for a while, but didn't want to make it where there was another hike i.e. to $30 before I relented to finally send out the card.

TTM autographs received: Tony La Russa

The longtime manager signed my cards in about three weeks c/o the Chicago White Sox back in August - at 77, he finally got a bit long in the tooth and stepped down as a big league manager after the White Sox season ended.

TTM autographs received: Greg Luzinski

The former big league slugger from the 1970s through the mid 1980s signed my cards in about three weeks for $20 - for the longest time I thought I had a 1984 Donruss card of Luzinski to send out, but I got the probably got the card from a card show repack back in 1996 and I don't know what ever happened to it.

To finally be able to send out a fee request to Luzinski, I needed to send a copy of the 1984 Donruss - so I ended up picking another copy from an online card outlet, look for the card to arrive in the mail and eventually send it back out, with at least another card I picked up in-person.

TTM autographs received: Luis Tiant

The former big league starting pitcher signed my cards in about a couple of months - I ended up picking up a couple of loose cards [1974 Topps and a 2021 Topps Chrome Platinum Anniversary] that ideally would look nice with an autograph and I ponied up to send $20 [$10 per card] to have my cards inked up.

Tiant was a player certainly before my time, but he pitched in the big leagues for 19 years and won 229 games - he is among the Hall of Very Good, but maybe deserved more consideration for actual the Hall of Fame.

TTM autographs received: Gregg Olson

The former big league reliever signed my cards in about three weeks back in August c/o Auburn University where he is a coach - I may have wrote on my request to Olson that he could keep the other cards if he wanted, but to at least sign the 1990 Leaf if he could.

However in my return, the only card he didn't end up signing was the one I wanted signed the most - I just had to chuckle at this apparent mishap [at least for me] and ended up grabbing a signed copy of the 1990 Leaf on eBay.

TTM autograph received: Larry Waker

The Hall of Fame slugger signed my card in about a couple of months - while he does various formal signings for a memorabilia company like Tristar or a trading card company like Topps, he responds to TTM requests where personalizes ['To Your Name'] and inscribes ['Best Wishes'] items sent to him like the card I sent.

TTM autographs received: David and Diego Segui

The second generation big leaguer and signed my cards in about two years - I'd written this off and was surprised to see a response, because I kept thinking about a TTM request I sent 15 years ago that I never got back.
David's father Diego signed my cards in about a couple of months, one of the TTM success I got when I was on vacation in September - the elder Segui was generally a successful big league pitcher over a 15-year career, despite a 92-111 won-loss record.

TTM autographs received: Rick Monday

The former big league outfielder and longtime broadcaster signed my cards in about a couple of months c/o Los Angeles Dodgers - he is known for saving the American flag from being burned by a couple of protesters when he was at Dodger Stadium as a member of the Chicago Cubs back in 1976.

Besides his flag saving heroics, Monday was also the first ever MLB draft pick in 1965 and had a 19-year big league career - hitting 241 home runs with a .361 on-base / .443 slugging and an OPS+ of 125, which meant he was about 25 percent better than the average MLB player.

TTM autographs received: John Olerud

The former first baseman signed my cards in about a couple of months, including a 1990 Leaf RC and a 1990 Score McDonald's - it's fun to get back cards for sets where I'm trying to get as many signed [1990 Leaf] or potential TTM fuel found in the wild [such as the seemingly harder to get McDonald's oddball].

This post marks my first since a month long hiatus due to being out of the country on vacation - not feeling emotionally invested in throwing out scheduled, automated posts, I wanted to create a gap, where something was clearly up with the lack of posting activity [regardless of whomever really reads what I might write on a regular basis].

TTM autograph received: Rich Reese

The former big league first baseman from the 1960s through the early 1970s signed my card in about a month - I originally got the card from Night Owl's 250-card giveaway and looked Reese up to see if he was still living and possibly signing.

I want to say something about occasionally having an old-school and/or vintage card and seeing if can still send it off TTM - maybe it takes me different places in my mind, where at least I get an idea of former MLB players who would have never registered in my memory banks.

TTM autographs received: Bill Mazeroski

The Hall of Fame second baseman signed my cards in about three weeks for his current per card fee - while I don't like the idea of finding more random cards out of the bulk quarter boxes [in this case] to send out in a repeat TTM request, I couldn't resist.

TTM autograph received: Todd Greene

The former big league catcher signed my cards in about a month - Greene might be another scratched off my 'mythical' TTM back log where there is a never ending list of guys who have signed in the mail for others.

I'm probably not as dedicated in systematically sending out unsigned cards to see if I can get ink on them - to feel like I'm still doing something to get some cheap thrills back in the mail box, I am up for sending to random subjects here and there.

I don't know remember if Greene was ever hyped up as a top prospect, but as a catcher, he put up big slugging numbers in the Angels' minor league system through the mid 1990s - he showed some power potential as a stocky righthanded hitter, but was never really able to establish himself longterm with the Angels and ended up being backup catcher for five other teams in an 11-year big league career.

TTM autograph received: Ron Guidry

The former big league lefty signed my card in about three weeks or so this past summer - I mailed out a request to him in March 2021 but presumably it got lost where I might have used the wrong address, he was helping out with the New York Yankees in spring training and never got to seeing my request, etc.

Maybe Guidry's career totals past his peak years are a little short, but he was probably the ace of the New York Yankees pitching staff from the late 1970s through the mid 1980s - I'm kind of surprised he has basically received little consideration for the Hall of Fame.

TTM autographs received: Frank Tanana

The former big league lefty signed my cards and added a personal tract card in about a couple of weeks - I might remember Tanana at the tail end of his career as a junk wax era guy, whose cards were strictly common fodder.

However, the Tanana that pitched through the 1980s and early 1990s was way different from the one that paired up with Nolan Ryan in the 1970s as California Angels' aces - it might be fascinating to look back at how great Tanana was for a time, before injuries sidelined his career and he had to reinvent himself as both a person and a player.

TTM autographs received: Charlie Hough

The former big league knuckleballer signed my cards in just about a week - I've gotten him in-person before, where he has dutifully signed my cards, but wanted to send a couple of cards [1984 Donruss and 1990 Leaf] I don't think I ever got him to sign.

TTM autographs received: Floyd Bannister

The former big league lefty signed my cards in about three weeks - there are guys who 'sign' autographs and there are guys who 'pen' signatures and Bannister's fits in the among the rarer pro athletes who really makes the effort to scribble out something easy to read.

Bannister maybe the type of big leaguer who gets obscured by history once their careers are over, but it's fun for me to give these guys a second look - despite a losing W-L record, the one-time Angel pitched more than 200 innings in 6 of his 15 years in the Major Leagues and had a double digits wins in 8 of those 15 years.

TTM autographs received: Mike Napoli

The former Angels catcher signed my two cards in about a couple of weeks c/o The Chicago Cubs were he is employed as a coach - I don't remember seeing him in the past 10 years, where I could have gotten him to sign, but I apparently got him to sign a card in-person during a spring training trip in 2017.

I think his Angels narrative was he was a power hitting late bloomer who made good, mashing his way to the big leagues - after establishing himself for several seasons, then manager Mike Scioscia 'gave up' on him because Scioscia preferred the catching skills of Jeff Mathis, who ended up never hitting at all despite eventually lasting through 2021.

Napoli would move on, help the Texas Rangers get to the World Series in 2011 and then help the Boston Red Sox win a championship in 2013 - he would be seen as this fan favorite, man of the people type who was always about the good vibes.

TTM autographs received: Doug Gwosdz

The former big leaguer catcher ["Eyechart"] from the 1980s signed my cards in about two weeks - I found it odd the 1984 San Diego Padres Smokey was signed in the back, but the bold autograph pops out on the lighter background where maybe it ends up bleeding into the background of the image in front of the card.

TTM autographs received: Sonny Jackson

The former big leaguer from the 1960s through early 1970s signed my cards in a year and 20 days - I counted this one gone as an MIA request, so it was nice to get one of my SASEs back in the mail box and see what I'd sent signed, along with one of the penny sleeves I used for one of the cards I sent.
