Some random Ted Williams pick ups

Maybe retro cards of legends end up being like junk wax era cards for me, where they are stlll everywhere and kind of redundant - however I'll still make many of them keepers just, because I like to think of myself as being able to appreciate the all-time greats, rather just than the 'here and now' guys.

Scrolling through some social media sales, I ended up picking up a couple of retro Ted Williams cards - the Project 2020 cards are $2-$4 paperweights in their magnetic one-touch holders after being originally $20 a pop from the Topps.com Web Site back through the pandemic.

I wouldn't go out of my way to seek these cards because they are the Beanie Babies of the pandemic - but may end up being nice enough finds at the right price.

For a $1 and change, I'll make a keeper out of a 2022 Topps Stadium Club Williams refractor - it maybe anachronistic, where a card from 2022 just isn't like an old-school vintage Topps card that would cost so much more, but it is fun seeing an unconventional image of an all-time great 'pop' in a modern card.

To amuse myself, I snuck in a different Ted Williams' card for $0.15 as part of my first [in four years] and only order I've received so far [out of three or four made] from a Web site - at times, I'm looking for the dumbest reasons to make miscellaneous cards keepers and a card of a guy sharing the same name as an all-time great maybe just what I'm looking for.

Featured autograph - Francisco Arcia

Arcia, who spent 12 professional seasons before reaching the big leagues, has had quite the week - hitting a pair of home runs and collecting 10 RBI in his first two MLB games for the Angels.

When Arcia was signed by the Angels as minor league depth, I picked up this 2012 Bowman Chrome refractor to pair up with a lone card I had - I was hoping to get his cards signed in-person during a spring training trip in 2017, but that didn't happen.

Digging through my notes about miscellaneous card pick-ups, I actually picked this up as part of a group of 120 cards I picked up for $8 and loose change at a card shop last fall - I typed out Arcia was a minor league journeyman 'who was in the Angels system this past season [2017], likely somewhere else next year.

In 2018, Arcia ended up back in the Angels system as minor league depth and I was able to get my cards signed - when Arcia was playing with the Salt Lake Bees.

TTM autographs received: Royce Lewis

The No. 1 overall pick last year personalized and signed my two cards in blue ink in about three weeks - I was glad to get this back since he's been pretty consistent about returning mail requests sent to him and I didn't want to miss out if and when he stops doing the TTM thing.

One thing that seems obvious with just about all the IP/TTM successes I've seen posted online is Lewis is personalizing everything - except perhaps for autographs he has signed at organized signings / paid events.

A pair of Todd Helton inserts

Like Hideo Nomo from the previous post, there is some recognition and affection for this 17-year MLB veteran, even he did not play for my team - the pair of cards caught my eye and I picked them up for the 'ownage' factor.

The 1998 Flair Wave of the Future card inserts was mentioned on another card blog back in 2014 and I wanted to see how a card from the set felt and looked like in-hand - maybe it's because the card came out more than 15 years ago, but the intended effect isn't quite on point, though it's not created like a conventional trading card.

I like the image on the 2000 Topps Stadium Club Chrome refractor #193 - even if though Helton's face is kind of obscured, it's taken from a unique angle.
